One new tree for each sold cap
with every cap sold we plan to plant a new tree on mother earth | stay tuned!
Let's get back to the roots
where the revolution began
2015
It all started with an idea
Wooden accessories started to become trendy. Besides wooden watches, sunglasses and bow ties, the only
key piece missing was the wooden baseball cap.
March 2016
First prototypes were produced
With the vision of developing a sustainable product, we focused on using only natural materials. The biggest
challenge was shaping a solid material like wood into a three-dimensional, flexible object.
December 2016
A long way of improvements
The first prototypes were slightly stiff and heavy. We kept experimenting with different materials and
working methods. Finally, we created the first flexible woodencap made of wood, cotton, natural rubber
glue and seams made of recycled PET bottles. Finally we got the process patented.
July 2017
Machines and processes were developed
In order to offer the caps to the broad public, we needed to make the manufacturing more efficient.
Therefore we developed customized machines to optimize the production process.
March 2018
A high quality product is born!
After finalizing the concept of our edition1, the packaging and marketing campaign,
our woodencap got awarded with the reddot award 2018 in the category of product design.
April 2018
Rootpecker at Milano Design Week 2018
First exposition of our woodencaps at Milano Design Week in trendy Lambrate District. We received outstanding
feedback by the audience!
July 2018
Rootpecker received the Red Dot Award
We enjoyed an excellent night at the Red Dot Award Ceremony in Essen and
connected with other designers.
take your measuring tape, put its beginning in the middle of your forehead and hold it with one hand
the other hand now guides it horizontally around your head until it overlaps, keeping the tape about an inch above the eyebrow and ear level
the tape should now fit snugly, but not too tight
the intersection now shows you the head circumference
alternatively, you can take a string and follow the same steps as before, then measure that length for a precise circumference with a ruler
if your head circumference is between two sizes, we recommend choosing the bigger one
Hi. We are Rootpecker!
Through globe trekking and cultural inspiration, the notion of creating a new form of practice within product design began
to grow. Circa 2015, while studying at university, Sebastian began experimenting with new materials,
drawing inspiration from nature and sustainable working practices. The result was twofold: a baseball
hat made of wood, and a special process that could enable its production—a process of deforming wood
three-dimensionally whilst retaining flexibility. Thus, Rootpecker was born.
A lot has happened since that first prototype:
Sebastian has continued to perfect the initial design. Philipps’ abilities as a mechanical engineer have brought forth new
technical processes in automated production by developing specialized machinery.
Persistent efforts resulted in the Edition1 of the Woodencap: A flexible baseball cap made of wood and cotton that offers
as much comfort as conventional hats.
We’ve stuck with our initial belief: produce every cap with sustainable, certified materials, through fair-trade practices
in Germany. We’re proud to set a new standard in the current fashion industry. In 2018 we would like
to share our ideas with you. Beginning in August, we will open a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to finance
our collaboration and fund a modest workspace with specialized equipment (such as a 3D laser, CNC milling
machine, production materials, etc.). For our first supporters during the Kickstarter kickoff, we would
like to present a special offer as a thank you: We will give an early bird reduction of 55% Off of the
initial Woodencap retail price.
To receive timely information from us, please subscribe to our newsletter: www.rootpecker.com
At the moment, our caps are only available via Kickstarter.com. As soon as we’re fully funded and
ramp up production, products will be sold through additional online channels and through retail with
selected contract partners.
In accordance with our philosophy, Rootpecker caps are made from
natural wood and textiles sourced from certified suppliers. The
adjustment band is made of leather, and the closing snap is made of
brass. Our adhesives are water-based.
The only synthetic material used in our caps is the yarn which is made of recycled PET bottles.
Rootpecker’s caps are as comfy as clouds.
The combination of our innovative and protected material composite,
the inner cotton fabric and a soft cotton sweatband result in a clean,
comfortable and pleasant wearing experience.
Our woodencaps are only about 1/3rd heavier than conventional
caps—in other words: the weight is barely noticeable. The
processed wood is about 1mm thick, which provides an extreme
flexibility that allows the cap to adapt to the shape of your head. The
sunshade can be bent like standard caps, especially in warm
temperatures.
There are currently six different sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, & XXL.
Everyone’s head is shaped differently, but through this size selection,
our caps cover a head circumference of about 53.5cm - 62.5cm.
The appearance of your cap will closely resemble the product photo;
the design and build will remain the same.
Our wood supplier pays strict attention to the consistency in the
quality of the wood they provide. However, every tree has its own
life, and each tree grows in a uniquely different way; thus, there will
be slight, unique variations in grain and color from cap-to-cap.
Please note that the oil and glaze also treat the seam, thereby
creating tiny variations in stain color.
Ultimately, all of this means that your cap will be one-of-a-kind.
Give it a little TLC. The initial production process paired with your attention and care means that subsequent treatment
will be unnecessary. With frequent sun exposure, dark wood suffers discoloration and fading. However,
we use a special UV oil to protect the wood and counter sun damage.
As with anything you own, excessive sun exposure, extreme temperatures,
high salinity and water logging can deform the wood and ultimately damage the fit of your cap.
Depending on frequency of use, the inner fabric can be treated with appropriate hygienic sprays.
Wood is a natural product, so our caps are meant to handle the
elements!
The wood used in construction is oiled and glazed at the onset of
production and is therefore protected from humidity and light rain.
If your cap is exposed to rain, we recommend wiping off the water
with a soft, dry cloth.
We cannot guarantee that our caps are submersible or washable.
Direct contact with salt water should be avoided.
No worries! This is completely normal. Wood is made of an intricate web of fibers, thus it is normal to
have tiny cracks in various places. Depending on the nature of the pieces of wood used to construct your
cap, these fibers may be split during production by the sewing machine. As the surface of your cap is
firmly pressed with a textile machine, the structure of the wood will tighten and hold in place.
Not exactly. We use certified woods and textiles without pollutants, water-based adhesives, plastic, cotton,
leather, and brass. If you are allergic to any of these materials or have detailed questions regarding
production methods, please contact info@rootpecker.com .
Well, we’d prefer that you wear your cap on your head.
However, if you want to put your cap away for a bit, we recommend
that you keep it a dry place, between -10 and 35 ° Celsius (14°-95°F), and out of
direct sunlight. The box supplied on arrival is ideal for storage.
A broken Rootpecker cap is heartbreaking sight for us.
Despite our in-house quality assurance, mistakes do happen, and our
caps may suffer abnormal construction damage. We want to correct
this for you, immediately.
In this case you can contact us at info@rootpecker.com.
If your cap is damaged through normal wear-and-tear, you may
contact us with the issue, and we will best determine if a repair is
possible.
Initial orders will be placed via donation through our Kickstarter campaign; credit cards will be accepted
through a registered Kickstarter account. All terms of payment agreed therein apply.
After your initial donation, we will contact you via email with a link to
provide us with your contact information, shipping address, choice of
wood, and cap size.
Once you have provided your information, we will contact you as
soon as your product is completed and has been shipped.
Should our campaign prove successful, the money raised will build
the Rootpecker workshop!
We will invest in the necessary space, machinery, and supplies to
commence constructive operations, hire additional help, and optimize
our production process.
Once the Kickstarter campaign has ended, we’ve set-up shop, and
production has begun, delivery of all pre-ordered caps is estimated to
be approx..4 months. Orders beyond our kickstarter goal might take longer. Be assured we are doing our utmost to get your cap to you as soon as possible.
All caps will be shipped nationally and internationally via DHL.
Information on this can be found here. Unfortunately we are unable to ship to Packstations.
We believe in walking a straight path with waste-free production
methods, safe working conditions, and honest wage equality.
Through open, sincere communication, we ensure that our suppliers
hold similar beliefs in fair-trade practices of economy, production, and
employment.
We sought excellent suppliers from the very beginning.
Currently all materials are sourced from within Germany, except our
labels and snap closures, which come from a trusted Chinese
manufacturer. Our wood supplier has the FSC seal of approval, and our textile is
IVN certified.
We appreciate your interest in Rootpecker products. Sebastian and
Philipp are responsible for the distribution of the products. Write us on
info@rootpecker.com. We are looking forward to get in contact with
you.
